Texas is Sizzling with Clean Energy Projects
The weather’s not the only thing hot in Texas this summer. The tremendous investment in clean energy projects throughout the Lone Star State has made Texas a national leader in clean energy investment.
Invited to see one of the new projects in person, CICE Southern Regional Director Jamie Green took a road trip to the Texas Rio Grande Valley, or as the locals say, “The Valley”, to celebrate the ribbon cutting ceremony for Citrus Flatts, a major utility-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) in Harlingen, Texas. Projects like Citrus Flatts are helping strengthen the Texas grid while creating economic opportunities for communities across the state. This event was hosted by the developer, East Point Energy, and the Greater Harlingen Economic Development Corporation.
This project has a major positive impact on the Texas grid: It has 100 MW of energy capacity, enough to power 80,000 Texas homes for two hours. It’s boosting reliability on the Texas grid, lowering costs and helping the regional economy.
Citrus Flatts also generates $10 million in taxes, making East Point Energy the third-largest property taxpayer in the City of Harlingen. East Point Energy also donated $175,000 to a soccer complex in the city.
BESS projects are a powerful tool in the grid toolbox, offering both greater reliability and helping support affordable electricity.
Congratulations to the Greater Harlingen Economic Development Corporation and East Point Energy on Citrus Flatts. This is just one example of how clean energy investments are contributing to Texas’ economic growth and helping communities prepare for the state’s growing energy needs.
