Wind Wins in Wisconsin
Last week marked a major milestone for clean energy in Wisconsin. The Public Service Commission (PSC) approved the Badger Hollow Wind Energy Center, marking the state’s first utility-scale wind project approval since 2011. The 118-MW, 19-turbine project will deliver lasting economic benefits to Grant and Iowa counties while also playing a fundamental role in fortifying the state’s energy portfolio at a critical time.
In the 14 years since the PSC last approved a wind project of this scale, energy demand has surged, and the need for affordable, reliable, quick-to-market power has never been clearer. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, Wisconsin currently uses about six times more energy than it produces. Projects like Badger Hollow offer a compelling alternative scenario, one in which clean energy is generated in Wisconsin, for Wisconsin, all while keeping the economic benefits in-state.
Over its projected 30-year lifespan, Badger Hollow will contribute approximately $590,000 annually in shared revenue to host towns and counties. These funds will flow directly into local budgets, giving communities the autonomy to invest in their own priorities, such as infrastructure and emergency services upgrades. The economic impact will reach beyond local governments, as participating landowners stand to receive a combined $38 million in direct lease payments, creating a stable income stream for area families. Additionally, the project will create 200 local jobs during construction, bolstering the state’s clean energy workforce and encouraging local spending.
When clean energy projects come to town, it's good for business. This is the message CICE’s Energizing Economies team delivered when engaging with chambers, economic development organizations, and business owners in the area.
Cal and Donna, owners of a campground near the project area, put it best: “Our campground plays an important role in the local tourism and hospitality economy, welcoming families, travelers, and outdoor enthusiasts throughout the year. During the previous utility-scale energy project in nearby Cobb, we experienced a significant increase in bookings and extended stays from construction crews and support personnel. This activity provided a meaningful economic boost, not only for our business, but for local restaurants, gas stations, and other small businesses in the area. Based on that experience, we’ve seen firsthand how clean energy projects can bring economic opportunity to rural communities like ours.” Clean energy development is economic opportunity.
As CICE’s Kristen May testified at the project’s public hearing, “As a Wisconsin resident, I share a personal investment in the prosperity of our state. As we work to secure our energy future, wind stands out as one of the most affordable and expedient solutions for a diverse, reliable energy generation portfolio.” With Badger Hollow Wind moving forward, momentum is building around Wisconsin’s energy future.
