New Energy for Rural Growth: Takeaways from IEDC’s Rural Retreat
Chambers for Innovation and Clean Energy (CICE) recently had the opportunity to attend the 2025 International Economic Development Council’s first-ever IEDC Rural Retreat in Great Falls, Montana. The event’s theme, Rural Recharged – New Energy, New Possibilities, brought together nearly 400 rural economic development leaders, policymakers, and stakeholders dedicated to fostering economic growth, resilience, and innovation in rural and tribal communities.
Over the course of three impactful days, CICE team members connected with peers, thought leaders, and changemakers to share ideas and strategies for driving rural prosperity. These communities are using innovation and collaboration to overcome challenges and strengthen their economies.
A highlight for CICE’s Jennifer Reiser and Logan O’Neill was touring NorthWestern Energy’s Ryan Hydroelectric Facility. Great Falls, MT is nicknamed “The Electric City” because of its system of numerous hydroelectric dams. NorthWestern’s total hydro capacity is more than 450 MW and spans more than 450 miles across Montana. More than 60% of the energy supplied in the Northwestern Energy territory comes from carbon-free sources, thanks in large part to its hydroelectric facilities.
