Local MA Chambers Fall Update: Economic Development Opportunities in Clean Energy
Local chambers testify at MA Statehouse today in support of clean energy. Jeannie Hebert, President and CEO of the Blackstone Valley Chamber, and Ian Abreu, Manager of Business Development and Public Policy at the SouthCoast Chamber, will testify at a legislative hearing in Boston on Sept. 19 in support of increasing the state's Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS). The legislature is considering increasing the RPS to drive clean energy development, attract investments, and grow jobs. There will also be a hearing about solar energy on Oct. 3.
More than three-dozen local chambers meet with legislators on clean energy. The largest gathering ever of local chambers and member businesses visited the MA Statehouse this summer to discuss clean energy. Rep. Thomas Golden, Jr. (D-Lowell) and Sen. Marc Pacheco (D-Taunton) briefed them on what to expect from the remainder of the 2017-2018 session, saying their goal is to ensure that Massachusetts remains a clean energy leader. More.
Chambers in the news. Five local MA chambers were recently featured in the news, including The Worcester Business Journal, The Cape Cod Times, and SouthCoast Today. They urged legislators to boost the state's commitment to renewable energy through the Renewable Portfolio Standard-- noting that clean energy creates jobs and cuts energy costs-- and supported opportunities in offshore wind.
Newton Needham sets new record in saving members money on energy. A total of 253 businesses have now committed to energy-saving upgrades and attracted more than $2.7 million in incentives to pay for the upgrades through the regional chamber's Business Energy $avers Program. More.
Cape Cod Chamber CEO to speak about clean energy at the World Chambers Congress. Wendy Northcross, President and CEO of the Cape Cod Chamber, will speak about Chambers for Innovation and Clean Energy before more than 1,000 CEOs and chamber leaders from more than 100 countries on September 20 in Sydney, Australia.
Nine local chambers recognized for educating members about solar savings. The leading chambers from the Chamber Solar Challenge program were recognized for educating more than 9,000 members about the economic benefits of solar energy. More.

New plan to modernize the grid with renewables. The Department of Energy Resources has unveiled a plan to help modernize the state's electrical grid to take better advantage of new renewable energy coming online over the next decade. More.
Nine states, including MA, move closer to clean energy economy. MA and eight other states in the region pledged to accelerate greenhouse gas emissions over the coming decade as part of the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI). More.
